Our story

From the workshop to the wall.

HANGBLOCS was founded in 2020/21 during the Covid pandemic - in the midst of a time when there wasn't much to do outside and studying or working from home wasn't any fun. In return, there was all the more time for long evenings in the workshop and at the CNC milling machine.

Johannes, founder of HANGBLOCS, combined two things there that had been part of his life for a long time: a passion for bouldering and climbing and the joy of developing and building things himself.

Many days spent climbing on the rocks of Franconian Switzerland and in the Alps eventually sparked the desire to be able to train effectively at home as well.

However, the hangboards available at the time never really convinced us. Either we were missing certain grip options or the training was very one-sided. Above all, a hangboard that combined finger training and a pegboard—in other words, pull-up options—did not really exist back then.

More out of personal interest, we therefore started building one ourselves.

 Prototype. Test. Modify. Repeat.

Drawing on experience in carpentry, combined with CNC milling and expertise in mechanical engineering, the first prototypes were created. Then came testing, discarding, adjusting, and testing again.

Grip depths were altered, radii adjusted, positions shifted, and various designs were tried out; many coffees were consumed at late hours and milling heads were broken. The integrated pull-up bars in particular exert greater leverage on the board, thus requiring significantly stronger material than standard hangboards.

The solution for this was birch plywood. Due to its multi-layer structure, it is particularly stable and excellently suited to the transverse loads caused by the pull-up bars.

We also didn't want to do things by halves when it came to mounting. That is why we deliberately include generously dimensioned screws and wall plugs that are matched to the design and the forces involved.

 Made in Germany.

The initial prototypes eventually evolved into a finished product. For production, we teamed up with a joinery workshop, where our boards are now manufactured entirely in Germany.

From European birch wood and CNC machining to the final board, we prioritize short supply chains, precise craftsmanship, and partners with whom we can work directly.

In this way, what started as a project in a makerspace has gradually become HANGBLOCS.

Not a large company. A small team.

Behind HANGBLOCS is not a large company, but a group of students and friends who are building this alongside their studies, work, and everyday lives.

We develop new ideas, take care of the shop, answer messages, and meet up regularly for major packing sessions, where your orders are prepared for shipment together.

Our home is the green Havelland region in Brandenburg, right at the gates of Berlin. From here, we now send our boards to climbers and boulderers far beyond the region.

And even though HANGBLOCS has come a long way since the first prototype from the makerspace, the idea behind it remains the same:

To build a product for climbing that we would love to use ourselves.
